In this cult classic play by Del Shores, a colorful family from a small Texas town must come to grips with the accidental death of the elderly family matriarch during a clandestine meeting in a seedy motel room with her much-younger married neighbor. The woman’s family must deal with their own demons while preparing for what could be an embarrassing funeral. Did we mention this play includes a coming-out story, a Tammy Wynette drag queen trying to be de-homosexualized by a horny psychiatrist, a guitar playing muse, a guy with wooden legs, and a funeral?

ROLES AVAILABLE

Bitsy Mae Harling – A local singer with “a reputation”; Peggy’s good friend. MUST PLAY GUITAR

Ty Williamson – Latrelle’s son, a closeted 20-something gay man who left his small Southern Baptist Texas hometown and moved to West Hollywood to become an actor.

Sissy Hickey – Peggy’s much-younger sister; aunt to Brother Boy, Lavonda, and Latrelle; she just wants to stop smoking.

LaVonda DuPree – Peggy’s younger daughter, a free spirit who is also Noleta’s best friend.

Dr. Eve Bolinger – “Doctor Evil” wants to dehomosexualize Brother Boy so she can write a book, appear on the Oprah television show, and quit her psychiatrist job at the mental institution.

SOUTHERN BAPTIST SISSIES by Del Shores
7 males, 2 females

“Southern Baptist Sissies” follows the journey of four gay boys in the Baptist Church.
(This play does contain adult language and situations)

Narrator Mark Lee Fuller tries to create a world of love and acceptance in the church and clubs of Dallas, Texas, while desperately trying to find a place to put his own pain and rage.
The world Mark creates also includes two older barflies, Peanut and Odette, whose banter takes the audience from hysterical laughter to tragedy and tears.

With a theme of religion clashing with sexuality, the play opened to rave reviews in Los Angeles during its original run in 2000 and became the most awarded play of the year, winning the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding LA Theater Production, as well as multiple LA Weekly Theater Awards, Los Angeles Critics Awards, Ovation Awards, Backstage West Garland Awards and Robby Awards.

MALE ROLES:

MARK LEE FULLER: 20’s, the sissy who thinks too much and dreams of a perfect world.

TJ BROOKS: 20’s, the masculine sissy, who believes and clings tightly to God’s Holy Word.
(This actor also doubles as a stripper, so must be in good shape and appear in tight undies.)

ANDREW THOMAS FORD: 20’s, the conflicted sissy who can’t pray away the feelings.

BENNY/IONA TRAYLOR: 20’s, the effeminate sissy who has escaped in a world of drag.
This part requires singing several songs in DRAG.

PREACHER-40-60: He preaches what he believes-hell, fire and brimstone.

RESTON “PEANUT” LEROY: 55-year-old tragically funny alcoholic queen. (Age is negotiable). Original role played by Leslie Jordan of “Will and Grace” fame.

BROTHER CHAFFEY/HOUSTON: Brother Chaffey is the latent church pianist and Houston the gay bar pianist. Both are the same actor/musician. Few lines and Must play piano/organ as we are performing in a real Church.

FEMALE ROLES:

MOTHERS (THREE ROLES): Mark’s is sweet and saccharine; Benny’s is beyond trailer trash; Andrew’s is older, worried and kind. All three mothers are played by the same actress.

ODETTE ANNETTE BARNET: 40’s-50’s, a loudmouth bar fly who has a sad secret.
