In an unprecedented stand for the #MeToo movement, Proud Mary Theatre Company is partnering with 25 of our Upstate sisters (and 5 male and non-binary gender allies) for the South Carolina premiere of The Pussy Grabber Plays – Stories Inspired by the Women Who Came Forward –  streaming now through August 30 on our Vimeo Virtual PlayHouse. FREE, $5 suggested donation to Planned Parenthood can be made at proudmarytheatre.com.

Some of the Upstate’s leading women directors and actors have volunteered their talent and time for this powerful, subversive and important stories.

Based on the bravery of Jessica Leeds and written by Bess Wohl, Jessica stars Annette Garver in the title role and Upstate thespian Laura Bunn as Megyn Kelly. Sandy Staggs directs.

Annette Garver was infected with the theatre virus at the age of 10, when in the 6th grade she was asked to play the role of a 7-year-old in the school play because she was small for her age and could pass for 7.  Her passion continued through plays at Jefferson Park Field House in Chicago, and high school & junior college in MD, and Foundry Methodist Church in DC.  Then she went to New York to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Being young and foolish, she married upon her return from New York, and was virtually absent from theatre for many years, except for 4 or 5 plays at GLT, until she was a widow and retired, and began acting at Centre Stage, Warehouse Theatre, Clemson Little Theatre, Electric City Playhouse, Oconee Community Theatre, Actors Theatre of Orcas Island, and a couple of others.  Favorite roles were Dorothy in “Inspecting Carol” (WT, CLT) and the title character in “My Old Lady” (ATOI).  She also directed for several productions for St. Peter’s Players, and two favorites at CLT: “On Golden Pond” and “Diary of Anne Frank.”She had been a rehearsal assistant, actor, stage manager, props manager, sound and light board operator, director. volunteer (usher and other tasks), and enthusiastice audience member at several theatres.    It’s a delight to be able to participate at a favorite theatre company, Proud Mary.  Many, many thanks to Sandy for asking!

The Pussy Grabber Plays is a series of eight short plays (two are musicals) created by some of the most highly acclaimed women writing for theater today. Based on interviews with seven of the women who have spoken out, the plays offer insights into each woman’s life, her decision to stand up, and the fallout she’s faced. Laced with humor, fear, heartbreak and anger, The Pussy Grabber Plays is political theater at its best.

All proceeds from The Pussy Grabber Plays benefit Planned Parenthood.
The Pussy Grabber Plays streams through Sunday, August 30 @ Midnight at Proud Mary Theatre‘s
