Proud Mary Theatre Company is headed to the races for a live Broadway-themed Drag Race Competition inspired by the Emmy award-winning TV show hosted by RuPaul.

The benefit for the four-year-old theatre crosses the starting line on Wednesday, June 30 at 7 p.m. (RAIN or SHINE) at Artists Collective Spartanburg, 578 West Main St. In Spartanburg.

This live reality competition and fundraiser will feature drag contestants of all skill levels heading heel to heel through a series of RuPaul-like challenges for their chance at the $500 Cash Grand Prize, and more opportunities for public and online appearances on behalf of Proud Mary Theatre Company.

Prizes will also be awarded to the winner of each challenge includng Snatch Game (contestants impersonate celebrities in a mock game show); The Library (contestants “read”/roast one another); and the ever-popular finale – Broadway Lipsync for Your Life.

Hosting the benefit is Carolina legend Patti O’Furniture, and in the Michelle Visage role is international drag entertainer Delighted Tobehere (America’s Got Talent and star of Hedwig and the Angry Inch at The Warehouse Theatre).

Upstate LGBTQ+ community leaders will also judge the performers: Caroline Caldwell (Upstate Pride SC),Ivy Hill (Gender Benders), John Fagan (The Warehouse Theatre’s Upstate Shakespeare Festival), and Vaughn Newman (Vaughn Newman Dance).

During wardrobe intermissions, patrons will be treated to live performances by cast members of Proud Mary Theatre’s upcoming Broadway musicals.
